Skype - What it is, and how it applies to you

Skype is a free VoIP, instant messaging and video conference software. It, effectively, allows the end user to communicate with the whole world for little, if not free. It has the most competitive rates compared to other VoIP providers such as Vonage. Skype to Skype calls are completely free while Skype to land line/mobiles uses the SkypeOut (read below) service. It can effectively utilize hardware and other software to meet one's needs.

Skype is supported on most major platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, Pocket PC, Smart Phones, PDA's and some Cell phones. The skype software can be installed on the associated supporting hardware and allow Skype to Skype or SkypeOut calls. In addition, a Wi-Fi compatible Handset can effectively replace your current phone. Some of these handsets allow integration for both Skype and normal provider usage.

Some important key features:

  • You may use Skype without ever touching a computer. Newer VoIP phone models are now shipped with Skype pre-installed. Check with your your local electronics store if they carry or visit your favourite online electronics store.
  • Replace your current telephone provider with Skype. (You may need to be advised on the disadvantages of using a VoIP solution).
  • Start a video conference with someone half way across the world. A feature perfectly suited for businesses who need to setup routine meetings.
  • By suscribing to the SkypeOut Service, you may call anywhere in the world.
  • Using your SkypeOut credits, you may also send SMS, MMS messages.
  • You can get your own answering machine!

Skype is a wonderful software targeted at average home users. Some users, such as students, may rely on Skype for communication. A student living in residence may subscribe to SkypeOut service instead of paying the high fees for land line usage. Alternatively if the student's family members have Skype installed, the calls are completely free. In addition, the student may use the video conference capability to host a "group study".

Business owners who are making long distance calls often might also benefit from SkypeOut services. With the ability to load the software on several phones, it can mimick the business enviroment better then a normal land line phone can.

SkypeOut

So what is this SkypeOut I've been rambling about? The SkypeOut feature allows you to use Skype as a complete alternative solution to your land line provider. It's got many great features including: Call Functions, Call Conferencing, Caller ID, Answering Service, Send/Recieve SMS/MMS and many others. What makes Skypeout so great is that it uses cost per minute rather than a flat fee. A flat fee is not very cost effective for many users. There are people who use less service then what they pay for, and some who use more and end up paying double there monthly charge. With SkypeOut you pay for what you use, and your balance carries on forever!

I hope my article has helped you to understand what Skype really is. If you are interested in VoIP solutions, or are already using one you may want to refresh your memory about certain disadvantages such as Emergency Services, and Power Failure.
