Yes, spring is upon us. What better way to start spring than cleaning your whole house spotless. Don't whine as your great great grandparents did this. In the olden days, when houses were heated using kerosene and coal, Soot would form over the walls and cabinets. Come spring time, and warm weather, the walls and cabinets needed a good scrubbing. Daily Tip has compiled a list of tips and ideas you should keep in mind when initiating the chore.
Outside the house:
- Start by doing an inspection of your house. Check soil quality. Check if there are bricks/tiles that need to be adhered after all the salt on your driveway, and check for cracks on your driveway.
- A roof inspection is a must. Keeping your roof healthy by seeing to it every year will save you on long term costs. Check for missing or broken shingles/tiles. Don't forget to check for leaks.
- Paint, and prime any wood that's been through the harsh winter. Check for peeling areas and repair them ASAP as it will protect it from the intense summer heat.
- Clear your garden of weeds. This is the perfect time to ensure the seeds do not grow. Weeds are very hard to eliminate the farther we move into spring /summer. Clear the garden of any debris and dead foliage.
- Get rid of standing waters. This is a breeding ground for mosquitos and can result in dangerous disease
For the Ladies, inside the house:
- Get rid of those clothes. It's a new season and it's a perfect excuse to get some new clothes. OK, not entirely true - but you can still donate your old clothing to the nearest help centre. Fold and store your winter apparel, bust out the short bikinis and the short shorts.
- Wash all windows. Make sure this job is assigned to someone who knows how to clean windows. There's nothing worse then cleaning a window only to find it even more dirty due to the dirty rag marks. You may want to check window treatments, leaks, vacuum the drapes\curtains and dust the blinds.
- Check your air conditioner. Better to do a test run now then wait till the first very hot day, only to find your AC is broken.
- Since we're on the topic, all you home owners with Central Air should take this time to inspect your ducts. If you haven't had duct cleaning for a couple of years, you may find that it's worth it. The quality of the air improves as well as cutting down electricity costs associated with running the AC.
- Vacuum the whole house. Move all furniture to get to those spots you've never seen before. Vacuum room corners (top and bottom) as cob webs tend to form there over the winters.
- Replace all batteries in clocks, smoke detectors and CO2 Sensors if you didn't do so while DST time change.
- Drain your water heater to remove any sediments. You may find this also cuts down on your bill. Highly recommended you visit your owner's manual to find instructions on how to do this.
- Go through your medicine compartment. Update any missing items from your first aid kit. Throw away pills that have expired. If you don't have a first aid kit, we highly recommend you invest into one.
- Hold a garage sale.
