Tip of the day! Causes and Prevention of Yellow Teeth!

As adults we often refrain from smiling. It's not because we are not happy at that moment, it's just that our teeth are yellow. Having bright white teeth can majorly impact the way you present yourself to other people. Whether it be your boss or the love of your life.

There are many factors that cause discoloration. Lately, there has been a lot of support for artificial treatments such as whitening strips, bleaching, and whiteing mouthwash; but the keyword here is artificial. Let's review some things that cause the discoloration of teeth and then we can talk about natural ways to prevent it!

Lets review some things that cause discoloration.

  • Certain Drinks may stain your teeth. Drinks such as Tea, Coffee, and especially Coca-Cola (or Pepsi). I've personally found Coke to be the worst of them all.
  • Whilst on the topic, tobacco products leave a hard stain over time. I'd also recommend refraining from smoking as it carries major health risks!
  • Poor dental hygiene is the leading cause of tooth discolaration. Failure to brush/floss your teeth at night leaves plaque on your teeth. This combined with either, or both, of the products above can leave a nasty stain quickly.
  • Poor dental hygiene can also cause disease. These diseases hit the enamel (the hard outer coating of your teeth) and cause it to discolor. Certain treatments also cause this.
  • Pregnancy. If your infected you may cause your baby to be born with discoloring of the developing enamel.
  • Genetics. Some people inherit genetic which cause them to have yellow, dirty looking teeth.
  • Flouride from your local environment might also be a factor in yellowing teeth. Flouride can be found in your local water (where the flouride concentration is high) or in excessive use of toothpastes and others supplements.

How do I prevent it?

Well, to begin, try to avoid the things you can from the above list. Drink juice/water instead of coke. Don't smoke. If your a regular coffee drinker, try cutting back a little. Brush and floss everyday before going to bed. You may also want to brush your teeth within one hour of eating. I suggest heading over to your dentist to find out more about prevention.

Some Home Remedies:

  • Try rubbing hydrogen peroxide on your teeth using a Q-Tip. Avoid your gums as it might burn later on.
  • A homemade toothpaste made up of salt, baking soda and water is a great way to get rid of those stains. I would personally crush the salt even more as it's very abrasive and might even damage your gums and enamel if used over time.
  • Replace your mouthwash with a 1 to 3 part vinegar/water solution
