How to prevent eye sight loss

There are many people I sympathize for, but people who have lost their eye sight take the crown. We take our gift of sight for granted. The majority of people on this planet do not seem to care about their eye sight. In today's society, the role and use of computers makes major impacts on our lives. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the youth of next generation all need glasses.

Vision Loss (aka mascular degeneration) is the most common cause of blindness in North America. Those aged 50 and up are more likely to develop loss of vision than the young generation. Again, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this number drops significantly lower.

I have compiled a list of things so you can diagnose yourself; over the Internet! Let's get started.

First, lets check if you already need glasses (or a good chance you will need them). Follow these tips:

  • Stare at a object for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, blink a few times. "Refreshing" your eye. Now stare at the object again but with your hand over your right eye. If the object miraculously changed color, you may  need to make an appointment with your doctor. Make sure you do it for the left eye also!
  • Upon watching a television show, or any activity that puts strain on your eyes, if you get a migraine or a headache I highly recommend consulting your doctor. It seems you may need glasses, or if you already do, a higher prescription.

Remember, these are just two simple tests. They do not determine if you are, indeed, going blind. Always consult your doctor in any case.

Avoid Eye Strain

  • If your doing any work that puts a strain on your eyes take a break. This doesn't necessarily mean working on the computer. If you're reading a book at night, writing a research paper, or driving long distancea, they all put a heavy strain on your eyes.
  • Make it a habit to blink your eyes rapidly every so often. In addition try closing your eyes and keeping them closed for a few seconds before going back to work.
  • If you must use a computer everyday for a couple of hours, invest in an anti-glare screen. This protects your eyes from the glare of the monitor. Also it is a good idea to keep your monitor about 20 - 30 inches away from you.
  • I am sure that most of you have read a book in the past in the dark, watched a movie in the dark or even worked in the dark. This puts a heavy burden on your eyes; making them work more than they need to. Always keep your lights on, and invest in some energy saving ones to keep your bill from sky rocketing.
  • Sleep! I can not emphasize this enough. A lack of sleep is one of the primary causes of vision loss. Make sure you are getting enough sleep for one night.

These are just a few tips to help you see longer. You should also be taking your own precautionary actions such as taking your vitamins and visiting your physician regularly. If its sunny outside, wear sunglasses. That is their purpose. Or you could take your work outside where there is more light to take some of the strain off your eyes.

Take care of your eyes because if you lose them, you will never get them back. Science has only gone so far.

Polina

I have been told that eyes also LOVE fresh air, especially after the rain, when there is much water in the air. I have noticed that if after the whole day at home where the air is dry (air conditioning/central heating) you have a walk, your eyes feel like breathing, as is attracting the moisture out of the air.
